Chennai (formerly known as Madras) is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is the biggest cultural, economic and educational centre in South India. Chennai is known as the "Detroit of South Asia" for its automobile industry. It is the fourth-largest city and fourth-most populous metropolitan area in the country and 36th-largest urban area in the world. Marina Beach :-Marina Beach in Chennai ( Formerly Madras ) , Tamilnadu, along the Bay of Bengal , part of the Indian Ocean. Marina Beach is the longest beach in India.This 13 K.M long beach also becomes the world's second longest natural urban beach. It is the most crowded beach in India , and one of the chief attractions of Chennai. Fort Museum : The Fort Museum exhibits many items of the period of English and later British rule. This building was completed in 1795 and first housed the office of the Madras Bank. The hall upstairs was the Public Exchange Hall and served as a place for public meetings, lottery draws and occasional entertainment. These relics are reminders of British rule in India. The objects on display in the museum are the weapons, coins, medals, uniforms and other artifacts from England, Scotland, France and India dating back to the colonial period. Original letters written by Clive and Cornwallis make fascinating reading. One set of quaint period uniforms is displayed for viewing, as well. However, the piece de resistance is a large statue of Lord Cornwallis. The National Flag of India was designed by Pingali Venkayyaand and adopted in its present form during the meeting of Constituent Assembly held on the 22 July 1947, a few days before India's independence from the British on 15 August, 1947. The first ever flown flag after the independence is stored in 3rd floor of the museum. Public are allowed to see but not to touch or take photographs. San Thome Basilica : San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic (Latin Rite) minor basilica in Santhome, in the city of Chennai (Madras), India. It was built in the 16th century by Portuguese explorers, over the tomb of St Thomas, an apostle of Jesus. In 1893, it was rebuilt as a church with the status of a cathedral by the British. The British version still stands today. It was designed in Neo-Gothic style, favoured by British architects in the late 19th century. St Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus, arrived in Southern India - Tamilakam - in the present day Indian state of Tamil Nadu from Judea in 52 A.D. and preached between 52 A.D. and 72 A.D., when he was martyred on St. Thomas Mount. San Thome Basilica is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. In 1956, Pope Pius XII raised the church to the status of a Basilica Minor, and on 11 February 2006, it was declared a national shrine by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India. The San Thome Basilica is a pilgrimage centre for Christians in India. The church also has an attached museum. Goverment Museum :- The Government Museum or Madras Museum is a museum of human history and culture located in the neighbourhood of Egmore in Chennai, India. Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the Indian Museum in Kolkata. Valluvar Kottam :- Valluvar Kottam is a popular monument in Chennai, dedicated to the classical Tamil poet, philosopher, and saint, Thiruvalluvar. It is located at the intersection of the Kodambakkam High road and the Village road. Valluvar Kottam was constructed in 1976 in the memory of Thiruvalluvar, who wrote his famous Thirukkural some 2,000 years ago. All 133 chapters and 1330 verses of the Thirukkural are inscribed on bas-relief in the front-hall's corridors. The construction of Valluvar Kottam is similar to a temple chariot, like a replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur. A life-size statue of Thiruvalluvar has been installed in the 39-m-high chariot.
KANYAKUMARI , TAMILNADU : Situated at the tip of the Indian Peninsula, Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of mainland India. Thiruvalluvar Statue :The massive 133 feet tall statue is of the Saint Poet Thiruvalluvar, who was considered to be one of the greatest Tamil poets in India. Thiruvalluvar Statue is one of the biggest in Asia and was unveiled on the 1st of January 2000. The pedestal of the statue is artistically designed and is decorated with 10 elephants that signify the various directions.
